Canada Visitor Visa from Ghana — 2026 Application Guide

Ghanaians need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada as a visitor. Applications are filed online with IRCC, biometrics are captured at VFS Global, Accra, and the decision is made in Dakar. Here's what the case officer is actually looking for — and what makes them refuse you under section R.179.

Last verified: November 2025 against IRCC, the Canadian High Commission in Accra and VFS Global Ghana. See editorial policy.

Proof of funds — the number that actually matters

IRCC does not publish a fixed minimum, but the Accra-Dakar decision pattern shows officers expect roughly CAD 2,000 per month of stay in liquid funds, plus return flight cost. A 2-week trip should show at least CAD 1,500 (≈ GHS 17,500) available; a 3-week trip closer to CAD 3,000 (≈ GHS 35,000).

  • Provide 6 months of stamped bank statements (not 3).
  • Explain any deposit over GHS 5,000 with a one-line annotation.
  • If sponsored, include the sponsor's last 3 months of statements, payslips and a signed letter of support.
  • Mobile money (MTN MoMo) statements are accepted as supplementary evidence but not as primary proof.

Documents checklist

  • Passport valid 6+ months beyond planned return.
  • Two recent passport photos, IRCC specs (35×45mm, neutral background).
  • Form IMM 5257 (TRV) and IMM 5645 (Family Information), completed online.
  • Letter of invitation from your Canadian host (if visiting family/friends), with their PR/citizenship document and last Notice of Assessment.
  • Proof of employment: letter on letterhead with leave dates, salary, return-to-work clause.
  • Proof of ties to Ghana: property documents, business registration, school letters for children, marriage certificate.
  • Travel itinerary: flights, hotels, daily plan.
  • Travel medical insurance (recommended, not mandatory).

Biometrics at VFS Accra

After paying the biometric fee, IRCC emails a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL). You have 30 days to book an appointment at VFS Global, Accra (currently at Premier Towers, Liberation Road). Walk in with the BIL, your passport and the appointment confirmation — fingerprints and a photo take about 10 minutes. Biometrics are valid for 10 years.

Why Ghanaian applicants get refused under R.179

Section R.179 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations requires the officer to be satisfied you will leave Canada at the end of your authorised stay. Almost every refusal letter cites one of these triggers:

  1. Travel history. No prior travel to a "low-risk" country (US, UK, Schengen, Australia, Japan, UAE) is the single biggest factor. Build history first if possible.
  2. Purpose of visit. Vague itinerary, no hotel bookings, or trip length that doesn't match the stated purpose.
  3. Personal assets and financial status. Recent unexplained deposits, salary inconsistent with lifestyle, or insufficient liquid funds.
  4. Family ties in Canada vs Ghana. Many close relatives in Canada and few dependants in Ghana = high refusal risk. Counter with property, business, and school letters.
  5. Employment prospects in Ghana. Short tenure, no return-to-work clause, or self-employment without registration documents.

You can request GCMS notes after a refusal to see the officer's actual reasoning — this is the single most useful document for a reapplication. Order them through an authorised Canadian representative (CAD 30, ~3 weeks).
