Ghana Passport Renewal — 2026 Step-by-Step Guide

The Ghana biometric passport is now valid for either 5 or 10 years, with the 10-year option introduced in late 2024. Applications are filed online through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Passport Office portal, with biometric capture at a Passport Application Centre (PAC). Ghanaians abroad renew through the nearest mission.

Step-by-step renewal in Ghana

  1. Apply online at the Passport Office portal (passport.gov.gh). Fill the form, upload a passport photo and choose your PAC.
  2. Pay the fee using the generated invoice — Ghana.gov, Ecobank, GCB or GTBank.
  3. Book a biometric appointment within 30 days. Available PACs: Accra (Ridge), Kumasi, Sunyani, Ho, Takoradi, Tamale, Koforidua, Cape Coast, Wa.
  4. Attend the appointment with originals and one set of photocopies. Fingerprints and a photo are captured on-site.
  5. Track status using the application reference; pick up in person with your old passport and printed acknowledgment slip.

Documents required

  • Old Ghana passport (biometric or older).
  • Ghana Card (national ID) — mandatory since 2022; without it the application cannot be filed.
  • Birth certificate (for first-time applicants and minors).
  • Two guarantors — a public officer of CS-15+ rank, lawyer, doctor, minister of religion or police officer of ASP+ rank. Each completes Section B with their Ghana Card number.
  • For minors: parents' passports / Ghana Cards and a signed parental consent on the form.
  • For name change: marriage certificate, deed poll or court order.

Renewing from abroad

Apply at the nearest Ghana embassy, high commission or consulate. The process mirrors the domestic one — online application, fee paid in local equivalent, biometric capture at the mission. Common locations Ghanaians use:

  • UK: Ghana High Commission, London (13 Belgrave Square).
  • USA: Ghana Embassy, Washington DC; Consulate General, New York.
  • Germany: Ghana Embassy, Berlin.
  • UAE: Ghana Embassy, Abu Dhabi; Consulate, Dubai.
  • South Africa: Ghana High Commission, Pretoria.
  • Canada: Ghana High Commission, Ottawa.

Processing from missions typically takes 4–8 weeks because booklets are printed in Accra and couriered back. Build in buffer time before booking travel.

Common mistakes

  1. Name mismatch with Ghana Card. If your card says "Kwabena" and your old passport says "Quabena", the system rejects the application. Update the Ghana Card first at the NIA.
  2. Photo not ICAO-compliant. The uploaded photo must be a plain white background, no smile, no glasses.
  3. Guarantors without Ghana Cards. The portal validates each guarantor against the NIA database — choose people whose cards are active.
  4. Missing the appointment within 30 days voids the payment. You can rebook but processing restarts.
