Travelling from Ghana

Travel Insurance from Ghana — 2026 Buyer's Guide

For a Schengen visa, travel insurance is not optional — it's a legal requirement under Article 15 of the Community Code on Visas. For the UK, US and Canada it isn't mandatory for the visa, but going without it is a financial gamble most Ghanaian travellers can't afford. Here's what actually counts as compliant cover, what it costs in cedis, and which providers Ghanaian applicants use most in 2026.

The Schengen minimum — €30,000

Your policy must:

  • Cover at least €30,000 in medical expenses, including emergency hospitalisation.
  • Be valid across all Schengen states, not just the country of application.
  • Cover repatriation (medical evacuation back to Ghana, or in case of death).
  • Be valid for the entire visa duration, plus a 15-day buffer for multi-entry visas.

The full text is in EU Regulation 810/2009 (the Visa Code). VFS, BLS and TLScontact in Accra will physically check the cover amount and dates.

UK, US and Canada — different game

  • UK: Not required for a Standard Visitor Visa, but A&E at any NHS hospital costs £200–£400 per visit for non-residents. Get cover.
  • USA: Not required for a B1/B2, but a single emergency room visit averages USD 1,500–3,000. Cover of at least USD 100,000 is the realistic minimum.
  • Canada: Provinces have no reciprocal healthcare for visitors. IRCC recommends USD 100,000 cover. Some Super Visa categories require CAD 100,000 cover for one year.

What's actually in the small print

  1. Pre-existing conditions. Most cheap policies exclude them. If you have hypertension, diabetes, or asthma, declare it and pay the surcharge — otherwise a claim will be denied.
  2. "Sports" exclusions. Bungee jumping, skiing, scuba diving, motorbike rental — all extra. Read the schedule of benefits.
  3. COVID-19 cover. Most 2026 policies include it, but a few legacy products don't. Confirm before paying.
  4. Excess (deductible). A USD 250 excess on a USD 500 claim means you collect USD 250.
