South Africa Visa from Ghana — 2026 Guide

Ghanaian passport holders need a Section 11(1) visitor's visa for South Africa. Applications are lodged at VFS Global Accra and decided by Home Affairs at the South African High Commission. Most denials come down to weak proof of return and incomplete yellow-fever documentation — both fixable.

Last verified: November 2025 against VFS Global Ghana and the South African Department of Home Affairs (DHA). See editorial policy.

Documents checklist

  • Form BI-84 completed in black ink (not blue — DHA rejects blue ink).
  • Passport valid 30+ days beyond intended return, with 2 blank facing pages.
  • Two passport photos (35×45mm, white background).
  • Confirmed return flight booking.
  • Accommodation: hotel booking or signed letter from a South African host with their ID/passport copy and proof of address.
  • Bank statements — last 3 months, stamped, showing approx USD 75/day of stay (≈ GHS 1,050/day).
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate — mandatory for travellers from Ghana. SA refuses entry without it.
  • Police clearance from Ghana Police CID (less than 6 months old).
  • Medical and radiology reports (BI-806 and BI-811) for stays over 3 months.
  • Employment letter with leave dates, OR business registration if self-employed.
  • Marriage certificate and unabridged birth certificates if travelling with children.

Children travelling — the unabridged birth certificate rule

South Africa is strict on child travel. Any traveller under 18 must carry an unabridged birth certificate (computerised, showing both parents' names). If only one parent is travelling, you also need an affidavit of consent (Form DHA-1771) from the absent parent, dated within 6 months. Border officers at OR Tambo turn families back over this regularly.

Where to apply in Accra

VFS Global – South Africa Visa Application Centre, Accra. Located on the Spintex Road corridor (verify exact address on the VFS website before travelling). Appointment is mandatory and booked online via vfsglobal.com. Bring originals plus one set of photocopies — VFS will not photocopy for you.

Why Ghanaian applications get refused

  1. Insufficient funds in the bank statement. A balance below USD 750 for a 10-day trip almost always triggers refusal.
  2. Missing yellow fever certificate or one signed by a non-approved centre. Use Korle Bu, 37 Military Hospital, or an authorised Port Health centre.
  3. Vague itinerary. "Tourism in South Africa" with no daily plan fails. List cities, dates and what you'll do.
  4. No proof of return. Short employment tenure, no leave letter, no property — all weaken the case.
  5. Children without unabridged certificates. Refusal at submission, not at decision.

South Africa visitor refusals can be appealed within 10 working days under Section 8(4) of the Immigration Act. The appeal goes to the Director-General of Home Affairs.
