Key things to know

  • ETIAS only applies to visa-exempt nationals (US, UK, Canada, Japan, etc.).
  • EES captures fingerprints + facial photo at first entry, valid 3 years.
  • Anyone offering Ghanaians a €20 'ETIAS instead of visa' is scamming you.

Documents you'll need

  • Valid Ghanaian passport (3+ months beyond return, 2 blank pages)
  • Schengen visa application form (signed)
  • Travel insurance — minimum €30,000 medical and repatriation
  • Confirmed return flight reservation
  • Hotel bookings or invitation letter for full stay
  • Bank statements (3–6 months) showing sufficient funds
  • Cover letter with detailed itinerary

How to apply, step by step

  1. 1

Confirm you need a Schengen visa, not ETIAS

Ghana is on the EU Annex I visa-required list. ETIAS is for visa-exempt countries only — you apply for a Type C Schengen visa.

  2. 2

    Apply at the right embassy

Use the embassy of your main destination via VFS Global, TLScontact or BLS in Accra. Pay €90 + service fee.

  3. 3

    Submit biometrics & wait

Fingerprints captured at the visa centre (valid 5 years). Standard processing 10–15 working days.

  4. 4

Prepare for EES at the border

On first arrival in Schengen post-Oct 2025, give 4 fingerprints + face scan at the EES kiosk. Allow extra time at busy hubs.
